Native American Performing Arts Festival Santa Fe, NM August 19, 2006
The Native Roots & Rhythms Festival is recognized as one of the nation's top venues for contemporary and traditional Native American music, dance, storytelling and comedy. Consistently known for impressive lineups, the 2006 NR&R presentation is no exception. Focusing on diverse musical collaborations, Native American “mainstream” favorites, and award winning artists; both Native American Music Awards and Grammy Awards, variety will be the theme of the evening. As expected of the festival, unique personalities of “Native America” will also be on hand to entertain, including the first ever Native American women to capture the Miss New Mexico USA title, Onawa Lacy.

TALENT PROFILES:
2006 Miss New Mexico USA
Onawa Lacy (Navajo) is the first Native American to win the Miss New Mexico USA title - Crowned on October 29, 2005 in Las Cruces, NM, a former Miss Indian World (2003-2004) & only the second American Indian to compete for the Miss USA title.
Ananeah
Ananeah is a global native fusion ensemble comprised of Southern Paiute fiddle great Arvel Bird, multi-string maestro William Eaton, Navajo singer/flutist/bassist Mary Redhouse, and pan-global percussionist Will Clipman. The group has a new cd, Ananeah, on Singing Wolf Records (www.singingwolfrecords.com).
Arvel Bird - is undoubtedly the best-known Native American violinist touring today. His Southern
Paiute/Me’tis ancestry is the inspiration for his unique style. Arvel Bird Live (Singing Wolf Records)
recently received the Native American Music Award for Best Instrumental Recording.
Mary Redhouse - (Navajo) is a versatile jazz vocalist with a five-octave range. She plays electric
bass, Native flute, acoustic guitar and keyboards. A 2005 Grammy nominee (with the R. Carlos
Nakai Quartet), she calls her vocal style "eco-spiritual" because it blends bird & animal calls, multi-
octave scat lines and Native chants. More information: www.maryredhouse.com.
Will Clipman – a Grammy Award-nominee Will Clipman’s career has spanned jazz, rock, blues,
reggae, and world music, and he has studied with master African drummers. Clipman has
performed on over forty recordings with various artists and has recorded for Canyon Records with
the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet, the William Eaton Ensemble, Robert Tree Cody, Randy Wood, and
Sharon Burch.
William Eaton - Guitarist/composer/Grammy nominee William Eaton is a master musician who
designs and plays remarkable instruments. He has performed throughout the US and has
collaborated on six recordings with flutist R. Carlos Nakai. He has also performs and records with many other notable musicians. (www.william-eaton.com)
“Collaborations” segment will feature several “up & coming” musicians backed by award winning musician/producer Larry Mitchell
Shelly Morningsong (Northern Cheyenne) is a newly signed SilverWave Records recording artist
and has been a performer on stage and screen since her early childhood. She has honed her craft
alongside performers such as Charlie Daniels, Juice Newton and Robert Mirabal. Shelly has
recently been working with producer Larry Mitchell on her debut cd, Out of the Ashes, scheduled
for release in October, 2006.
Alan Tafoya (Jicarilla Apache) is a musician, poet, songwriter and actor. He wrote the song Dancing on the Edge of the Blade for a documentary film about his win at the Soldier of Fortune combat knife fighting tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alan believes in the positive healing power of music and helps keep the stories and vision of his Jicarilla people alive.
Tash Terry (Navajo) was born in Shiprock, New Mexico. She attended Navajo Community College
and is currently pursuing a BFA in Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Tash is
also a professional interpreter for the hearing impaired. She has been working on recording
projects with producer Larry Mitchell.
Larry Mitchell - Award-winning producer/guitarist Larry Mitchell has toured with Robert Mirabal,
Billy Squier and Tracy Chapman, among others. He has released many recordings including film
scores, and has produced singer/writers in rock, acoustic folk, pop and R&B. Over
the past few years he has produced and recorded with Mirabal, as well as up & coming Native
American artists Shelly Morningsong, Alan Tafoya and Tash Terry.
“Canyon Record Label” – with 50+ years experience in the Native American Music genre and a multiple Grammy Award winning label, this segment will showcase a sample of their top artists!
Robert Tree Cody (& Will Clipman – bio above) Canyon Records recording artist Tree Cody
(Dakota-Maricopa) has toured the world as a flutist, singer and dancer. A prize-winning traditional
dancer well known on the pow-wow circuit, he also teaches about the folklore, crafts, music and
traditional ways of Native Americans. His recordings have won multiple Native American Music
Awards.
Radmilla Cody - Canyon Records recording artist Radmilla Cody was the 46th Miss Navajo Nation
(1997-98). She is an Indie and Native American Music Award-winner. A biracial woman born and
raised herding sheep and spinning wool, she helps maintain traditional culture by recording music
and lyrics that children sing with pride and Dine elders are proud of.
“Journeys” Segment: A journey of the creative evolution of Native American music
Bill Miller - A Mohican Indian from the Stockbridge-Munsee Reservation in Wisconsin, this
Grammy Award-winner has long been one of the most admired figures in the Native American
music arena. He recently won a Native American Music Award for Best Song/Single of the
Year, Sacred Ground.
Governor Joe A, Garcia - Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan) Pueblo Governor Garcia is the
current President of the National Congress of American Indians and a long-time singer/guitarist for
the country music band Jed. He performed at the first Native Roots & Rhythms Festival in 1995.
Native Roots - With an innovative musical style, Native Roots merges Native influences with a
touch of blues, soca, world beats and reggae. A well-traveled band, Native Roots notable
performances include: 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics, Sundance Film Festival,
Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Kennedy Performing Arts Center, Bob
Marley Reggae Festival & they went international (March 2005) playing throughout New Zealand!
