Albuquerque, NM - The world returns to Albuquerque this September as ¡GLOBALQUERQUE! 2008, New Mexico's Annual Celebration of World Music & Culture, takes place Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 20. Now in its fourth year, ¡Globalquerque! has become the Southwest's and Rocky Mountain region's premier world music festival, drawing music lovers from throughout the area and across the country. Taking place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the festival will light up the Center's soaring plazas with world-class music and dance. The family-friendly Global Village of Craft, Culture & Cuisine and free Saturday daytime programming brings out fans of all ages.

¡Globalquerque!'s exciting line-up for 2008 is headed by acclaimed Mexican-American diva LILA DOWNS on Friday, Sept 19. Ms. Downs gained international attention for her musical role in the award-winning 2002 film Frida, starring Selma Hayek as Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Her song "Burn It Blue" from the film was nominated for Grammy and Academy Awards, and she was awarded a Latin Grammy in 2005 for her album Una Sangre ("One Blood"). Many of Ms. Downs' songs promote respect for human rights and dignity. "Captivating in every sense...the heavens don't get any closer than this." (Los Angeles Times)

Soukous superstar KANDA BONGO MAN from the Democratic Republic of Congo will headline the festival on Saturday, Sept 20. The world-spanning roster continues in Africa with the hypnotic "desert blues" of Malian guitarist VIEUX FARKA TOURÉ (son of Ali Farka Touré). Artists from the Southwest and the Americas feature double-Grammy winning Native-American flutist MARY YOUNGBLOOD (Seminole/Aleut), electronicatrendsetters MEXICAN INSTITUTE OF SOUND (Mexico), Brazilian party music of FORRO IN THE DARK , prayerful Hopi songs from CLARK TENAKHONGVA (Hopi), and the dynamic French-Canadian trio GENTICORUM (Quebec).

Artists from Europe and the Middle East include Berlin's madcap genre busters
17 HIPPIES, Israeli vocalist MOR KARBASI with her mesmerizing Spanish/Jewish repertoire, passionate Marseilles revivalists LO CÒR DE LA PLANA (France), Russia's post-folk group REELROADЬ, and the bold Mediterranean music of Athens-born singer SAVINA YANNATOU (Greece). Asia and the Pacifics are represented by Hawaii's transcendent Pan-Polynesian ensemble HAPA, and the shimmering Chinese melodies of ORCHID ENSEMBLE.

Fans can visit the official festival website www.globalquerque.com for more information, including schedule and lineup updates, tickets, and hotel and vacation packages. ¡Globalquerque! tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets (www. ticketmaster.com, 866-448-7849) including all Smith's stores in New Mexico, select F.Y.E and Macy's stores nationwide and at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Box Office in Albuquerque, NM.

"¡Globalquerque! offers a sense of discovery," says Tom Frouge, festival co-founder and producer along with Neal Copperman. "Our vision is to expose people to things they normally wouldn't be exposed to. That could be a singer from Greece or 'desert-blues' music from Mali, a group from China or one from our own Southwestern backyard."

Past performers have included Grateful Dead Mickey Hart's Global Drum Project, Grammy-winning blues queen Koko Taylor, Hassan Hakmoun (Morocco), Les Yeux Noirs (France), Fiamma Fumana (Italy), Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe), Yungchen Lhamo (Tibet), Kiran Ahluwalia (India), Curumin (Brazil), Rahim AlHaj (Iraq), Baka Beyond (Cameroon/UK), Kevin Locke (Lakota/Anishinabe), Lura (Cape Verde), Hassan Hakmoun (Morocco), Gjallarhorn (Sweden) and Shooglenifty (Scotland).

¡Globalquerque! takes place at Albuquerque's beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center, a unique arts center encompassing 50 acres nestled along the Rio Grande. The festival will present a wide range of performers from five continents on three distinct stages over two nights, including representative artists from New Mexico's varied musical traditions. A staggered evening schedule allows music lovers to sample the broadest range of performances and in a variety of settings, from the intimate Fountain Courtyard Stage to the state-of-the-art, 691-seat Albuquerque Journal Theatre to the Plaza Mayor outdoor festival concert stage.

An international feast of food, music and crafts can be found in the Global Village of Craft, Culture & Cuisine; and on Saturday the free family-friendly day programming offers an exceptional variety of music and dance workshops, instrument building for kids of all ages, street performers, puppetry and much more. The Centers museum will also be open and free to festival attendees. A weeklong, statewide celebration of international culture leads up to the festival.
