SERIES MOVES TO NEW HOME!
Next Session: APRIL 5, 2007 at Ben Michael's Restaurant
Thanks to all who came out for the March session of the Albuquerque Songwriter Series at Season's and special thanks to Season's for hosting us a the last minute after we unexpectedly lost our previous home. For April's edition the monthly Albuquerque Songwriter's Series will debut at its new home, Ben Michael's Restaurant near Old Town. Presented by the City of Albuquerque Music Office, part of the Economic Development Department, the monthly songwriter series features a changing lineup of local songwriters with the next session taking place April 5 beginning at 7:00 PM. Admission is free.
The goal of the series is to showcase songwriters from all genres of music by presenting an evening of exploring song craft in an intimate setting. Each month the featured songwriters join each other on stage to take turns playing original songs, talk about their origins, how they came to write them, their influences and challenges. Songs range from completed pieces to works in progress.
APRIL featured songwriters include:
Songwriter and NewSong Showcase (Walnut Valley Festival, Winfield, KS) winner JIMMY ABRAHAM
Little Kiss Recording Artist JASPER BROWN
Human Beatbox ZACH FREEMAN
The Albuquerque Songwriter Series is hosted each month by songwriter and musician Roberto Martinez, Jr., who among other music projects performs with New Mexico’s legendary traditional band Los Reyes de Albuquerque. Mr. Martinez is also a member of the Mayor’s Albuquerque Music Advisory Board (AMAB). James de Champlon, also a member of the AMAB and a partner in local record label Little Kiss Records, coordinates the monthly series with City Music Liaison Tom Frouge.
“This series is not about performance, nor is it about perfect voices or playing.” says Mr. Frouge. “It is about the art of song craft, and is not an open mic presentation. The stripped down setting, whether the songs are rock, rap, jazz, classical, folk, world, Latin or country, will showcase the compositions presented as they were written, on a single instrument. It will allow the Albuquerque songwriting community the opportunity to display their wares to other songwriters perhaps learn from one another and, hopefully help nourish that part of the music business in Albuquerque. It will also allow the community at large to get to know these artists through their songs.”
Ben Michael's Restaurant is located at 2404 Pueblo Bonitio NW, Albuquerque (directly off Rio Grande across from Hotel Albuquerque and The Q Bar) 505-224-2817
