Baca, Max

Max Baca ~ Albuquerque

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Max founded the conjunto band, Los Texmaniacs, in 1997, which incorporated elements from genres such as rock and roll and jazz while still honoring the roots of conjunto tejano. He has played on numerous Grammy winning albums.

Combine a hefty helping of Tex Mex conjunto, simmer with several parts Texas rock, add a daring dash of well-cured blues, and R&B riffs, and you’ve cooked up the tasty TexManiacs groove. Not to say that this group’s sound is for musical gourmets only… it is,  “hip music everyone can relate to” .

Los Texmaniacs — feed the masses, with only the best in musical fare. Founded by Max Baca (bajo sexto, vocals), the TexManiacs are a product of his wide-ranging experience touring and recording with everyone from his father’s family conjunto, Flaco Jimenenz, the original Texas Tornados, Los Super Seven  and even the Rolling Stones.

Max is a legend on the bajo sexto, a twelve string guitar-like instrument, which customarily provides rhythm accompaniment for the button accordion, thus creating the core of the conjunto sound. On the bajo, Max does all that and way more, using the instrument to push the TexManiacs sound to another level of vibrancy altogether. He has displayed a musical virtuosity and blistering guitar riff solo style, that is now being emulated by young bajo players internationally. Max is being credited as turning a traditional folk / roots/conjunto instrument hip again, attracting young, new audiences while maintaining his roots in traditional conjunto. His many sojourns as a life long musician have resulted in an impressive international touring schedule, including four tours to Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Kosovo to entertain our troops. Max has appeared on national television programs such as Conan O’ Brien, David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Austin City Limits. Max has also bee featured in several PBS documentarys such as: Songs of the Homeland, American Roots Music, and Latin Music USA. Max has also participated on ten Grammy winning projects including the double-platinum CD for the Rolling Stones Voodoo Lounge (Virgin 96). Max’ most recent Grammy was earned with his band, Los TexManiacs Jan 30th 2010 for Borders Y Bailes (Smithsonian Folkways) 2009.

Like a great salsa., the Texmaniacs mix the simplest yet finest ingredients of Texas music to create a sound solidly rooted in tradition, exploding with contemporary vitality. Texmanics versatiility has led them to performances such as The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, International Accordion Festival, Kennedy Center , Governor of Texas Ball and many major festivals oversees in countries such as Germany, Holland, and Spain.

Los Texmaniacs have been awarded proclamations as ambassadors of good will from several goverment entities such as : Cities of San Antonio Texas, Austin Texas , Los Angeles California , and Alberquerqe New Mexico.

Their first CD, A Tex Mex Groove,(2004) contains a wide sampling of musical focus that is characteristic of the group. It also hosts a legendary line-up of guest artists, such as Flaco Jimenez, Augie Meyers, and Ruben Ramos, and Los Lobos, who share the TexManiac take. The second CD,”About Time”(2007) peaked at #1 on the Tex-Mex charts. Los Texmaniacs current CD is the Grammy Award winning “Borders Y Bailes” for Smithsonian Folkways (2009). Smithsonian Folkways is the record label of The Smithsonian National Museum of The United States.

This project further cemented Los Texmaniacs, rightful place in history as master musicians in their respective musical disciplines. So don’t just stay for supper, make sure you stick around for dessert.

Antonia Apodaca ~ Rociada | Las Vegas

Genres: New Mexico traditional & folk music

Antonia Apodaca (November 1, 1923-January 25, 2020) was a beloved icon of New Mexican folk music. She was a musician and songwriter for over 80 years. Her primary instruments were accordion and guitar, along with her passionate voice and treasure chest of traditional music.

From a family of musicians, her mother played the accordion and guitar and her father the guitar, accordion, and violin. At the age of 18, she met her future husband, Macario “Max” Apodaca a fiddler from Carmen, a village near Mora, New Mexico. They settled in Wyoming in 1949 where they lived for 30 years, performing together for both the Hispanic and Anglo communities at dances and local events, and raising five children. They returned to New Mexico in 1979.

Antonia received the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 1992, the same year she appeared at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C.

Apodaca moved to Las Vegas in 2010 after her home in Rociada burned down. She continued to perform with Trio Jalapeño. Their concerts often included her own compositions, including famous and beloved “Estas Lindas Flores” (These Beautiful Flowers). She was awarded the Premio Hilos Culturales in 2011, an annual award presented to folk artists from New Mexico and Colorado “who have distinguished themselves in their communities as folk musicians or folk dancers of traditional southwest styles of Canciones Del Pasado or Bailes Antiguos.” Toni received the New Mexico Music Commission’s Platinum Music Award for lifetime achievement in 2018.

Antonio, Lorenzo

Lorenzo Antonio Sánchez Pohl ~ Albuquerque

lorenzo antonioGenres: New Mexico music, Ranchera, Mariachi, Corrido

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, October 3, 1969, Lorenzo is a singer and songwriter of Latino origin, who is known and recognized in Mexico and Latin America, where he has sold millions of records. He was raised in both Mexico and in the United States, and Lorenzo is fluent in both Spanish and English. Most of his songs are in Spanish, but he has released songs in English as well.

Early life

Having come from a musical family, Lorenzo Antonio was exposed to music as soon as he was born. By the age of 5, Lorenzo’s interest in music was very apparent, and his father taught him how to sing “La Bamba”, while accompanying himself on the guitar. He learned this very quickly, and Lorenzo’s parents decided to place him in private classical guitar lessons, which he studied from his childhood through his teen years.

Throughout his childhood, Lorenzo briefly studied the violin, banjo, and piano, as well as the cello, which he played throughout elementary school, middle school, and high school. During these early years, Lorenzo also displayed great vocal and performing abilities and on occasion, his father, Amador Sánchez, also known as the very successful singer / songwriter / producer, Tiny Morrie, would present Lorenzo onstage at his performances.

Career

Lorenzo Antonio’s career began in June 1982 when at age 12, he and his 4 sisters (Verónica, Rosamaria, Kristyna, and Carolina) won 1st place in one of the most important talent festivals in all of Latin America, “1er Festival Juguemos A Cantar,” which was held in Mexico City and transmitted by Televisa on the immensely popular television show, “Siempre en domingo.” They appeared in the competition as “Lorenzo Antonio Y Su Grupo” (Lorenzo Antonio And His Group), and performed Lorenzo’s composition, “Vamos A Jugar.”

For winning this competition, Lorenzo was awarded 3 appearances on “Siempre En Domingo,” as well as a record contract with Discos Musart. All of this exposure launched Lorenzo’s career, and by the end of 1982, he had become one of the most successful and famous Latin artists of that time, recognized immensely for playing the violin, the uniforms that he and his sisters wore (sailor caps and bellbottom pants), as well as for the choreography that he and his 4 sisters performed to his song, “Vamos A Jugar,” which was a song about a dance move, “la mano izquierda va adelante y la derecha para atras” (the left hand goes to the front and the right hand goes to the back).

As Lorenzo entered his teen years, he separated from his sisters and continued his career as a soloist. At that time, this was a controversial change due to the group’s popularity, and many of their fans did not like this. Ultimately, the change proved to be a great success for Lorenzo and his sisters. Lorenzo’s popularity continued to grow, and he became one of the most successful and popular singer / songwriters of the 1980s and 1990s. His 4 sisters continued for a few years as the children’s group, “Chikis,” and some years later, became the internationally successful and famous girl group, “Sparx.”

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lorenzo toured Mexico, Central America, South America, and the United States extensively. Most of his international hits came during this time period. Among the most popular are, “Vamos A Jugar,” “Muchachita,” “Como Me Gustas,” “Busco Un Amor,” “Dile,” “No Llorare,” “Buscare” (peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Top Latin Song chart, May 14, 1988), “El No Te Quiere” (peaked at #9 on Billboard’s Top Latin Song chart, April 12, 1997), “No Quieren Que Te Quiera” (peaked at #16 on Billboard’s Top Latin Song chart, August 16, 1997), and “Como Cuando Y Porque” (peaked at #12 on Billboard’s Top Latin Song chart, July 16, 1994), which was an original song written and given to him by Mexican singer / songwriter, Juan Gabriel. In 1987, Lorenzo scored what is considered to be his greatest hit, and one of the most successful Latin ballads of the ’80’s, the now classic ballad, “Doce Rosas.” On May 23, 1987, Doce Rosas reached #3 on Billboard Magazine’s Top Latin Songs chart.

In the early ’90’s and after a 2-year college stint at the University of New Mexico, Lorenzo Antonio signed with a new record company, Warner Music Group. At this time, he also met Juan Gabriel and had a successful comeback with the albums, “Mi Tributo A Juan Gabriel,” and “Tributo 2.”

In the mid ’90’s, Lorenzo focused his attention on his sisters, Sparx. They were starting to gain notoriety in the Latin market in the United States, and Lorenzo spent his time writing songs for them.

In the late ’90’s, Lorenzo signed a record deal with Fonovisa Records. The albums that Lorenzo released at this time were geared more to the Regional Mexican market, and Lorenzo’s record sales were among the highest of his career.

The Songwriter

Not only has Lorenzo Antonio written many of his hit records, (“Vamos A Jugar,” “Como Me Gustas,” “Busco Un Amor,” “No Quieren Que Te Quiera,” and others), but also hits for other artists as well. Some of the most outstanding are: “El Baile De La Gallina” performed by Tatiana, “Te Amo Te Amo Te Amo,” “Los Hijos De Pantaleon,” and “El De Los Ojos Negros,” performed by his sisters, Sparx.

Other Styles

While Lorenzo Antonio is most known internationally for interpreting romantic ballads, he has also been very successful interpreting Mariachi music. He participated with his sisters, Sparx, on the certified platinum albums, “Cantan Corridos” (peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Top Regional Mexican Albums chart on February 8, 1997), and “Cantan Corridos Vol. 2,” which are two of the most successful albums of his career.

Lorenzo has also released several albums in the “Ranchera” genre that feature his guitar playing.

Charity Work

Lorenzo Antonio and his sisters, Sparx, established a non-profit foundation in 2001. Known as “The Sparx and Lorenzo Antonio Foundation,” its primary purpose is to provide scholarships to students, and to encourage higher education. Every year since its inception, Lorenzo Antonio and Sparx have held at least one concert where funds are raised for “The Sparx and Lorenzo Scholarship.” This scholarship is also awarded yearly. Since 2001, Lorenzo Antonio and Sparx have awarded approximately $750,000 in scholarships to students.

Cultural Impact

Mexico

In Mexico, there was an explosion of child entertainers that began in the early 1980s with acts like the Spanish group, Parchís, Lucerito, Luis Miguel, Timbiriche, Pedrito Fernandez, and Menudo. This cultural phenomenon of child entertainers was boosted even further with the broadcast of the “1er Festival Juguemos A Cantar,” on “Siempre En Domingo”. Due to the fact that Lorenzo Antonio Y Su Grupo won 1st place, they were at the forefront of the explosion of young talent at that time.

Immediately after Lorenzo Antonio Y Su Grupo were announced the winners of the 1er Festival Juguemos A Cantar, an immediate controversy ensued: Another finalist, Juanito Farias, who was also very popular and also a favorite to win the contest, came in last place. This was a major surprise to everyone and before the show ended, Raul Velasco, named Juanito Farias, “El Mejor Interprete Del Festival” (The Best Interpreter of the Festival). All of this stirred up much controversy and almost everyone had an opinion on the matter. Many felt that Juanito was robbed of 1st place, while many others felt that Lorenzo Antonio Y Su Grupo won 1st place fair and square. That argument continues to this day, and it can be seen in various forums and comments on YouTube and other places on the Internet.

United States

The financial help that Lorenzo Antonio has provided, along with his sisters, Sparx, via their foundation to New Mexico students, has had a substantial impact on the lives of many young adults. Many of the recipients of the Sparx & Lorenzo Antonio Scholarship have stated that they would have never been able to afford a higher education had it not been for the scholarship they were awarded.

Personal life

Family

Lorenzo Antonio’s career has always been tightly intertwined with his family. His sisters, Sparx, and he perform regularly together, as well as collaborate with each other on their recordings, and in their musical business ventures.

Lorenzo also descends from a very musical family tree. On his paternal side, Lorenzo’s father, Amador Sánchez, known artistically as Tiny Morrie, was a very successful singer, and continues to be a very successful songwriter and producer. Lorenzo also has two paternal uncles that are musicians. Lorenzo’s paternal grandparents also had a great love for music, and both of them played instruments and sang. Lorenzo’s granduncles also were musicians.

On Lorenzo’s maternal side, his mother, Maria De Lourdes Gloria Pohl, known artistically as Gloria Pohl, had success in the southwestern part of the United States as a singer. Lorenzo also has 12 maternal uncles and almost all of them were or are musicians, as well as his maternal grandfather.

Relationships

Until recently, not much was know about Lorenzo Antonio’s romantic life. There were rumors that he dated several artists, such as Lolita Cortez and Lucero in the 1980s, but none of these rumors were ever substantiated.

Lorenzo married in 2004, but divorced less than a year later. There were no children from that marriage.

In 2010, Lorenzo appeared on a television show called, “Duetos,” which was televised by Estrella TV. There, he met singer, Graciela Beltran. They had a much-publicized romance, and they appeared on several Latin television shows together, such as Ventaneando, and Escandalo tv. But for unknown reasons, their relationship ended abruptly after only 6 months in 2011.

Fitness

In 2005, Lorenzo Antonio started suffering from sciatica pain caused by a bulging disc in his lower back. The pain was so severe and debilitating that he even considered back surgery. In 2007, he began working with a personal trainer. At the advice of his trainer, Lorenzo changed his diet and exercise habits, and within 1 year, Lorenzo was almost 100% back to normal.

Lorenzo’s physique had changed considerably due to his healthy lifestyle, and he capitalized on this by releasing a 2009 calendar showcasing his new physique.

Manson, Jono

Jono Manson ~ Santa Fe

Jono MansonJono is a prolific singer/songwriter and seasoned performer, with a long track record that includes major-label releases as both recording artist and producer. During a career spanning almost four decades he has performed everywhere from the local dive to Madison Square Garden, from house concerts to festival stages. He has released numerous albums and amassed a vast catalog of original material.

His songs have been recorded by Grammy Award – winning artists and have been featured in major motion pictures, on network television and in national advertising campaigns. He continues to collaborate with a wide range of artists as a co-writer and producer, and as a member of numerous side projects. He also owns and operates a recording studio in the hills north of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he also lives.

On May 31st 2014 Jono was the recipient of the 2014 “Norman Petty Producer Award” (Producer of the Year) from the New Mexico Music Awards.

Recently, Jono’s recording of “Honky Tonk in My Mind” was featured on the CW Network series “Hart of Dixie”. Three of Jono’s songs appear on the new album by “American Idol” alum Crystal Bowersox (2013 Shanachie Records), and he is the co-producer of her forthcoming EP to be released in the summer of 2014. Another Manson composition was recorded by Blues Traveler for their most recent release (2012 429/Savoy Records). Four of his songs are featured in the new family film “I Heart Shakey” (2012 Amarok Films). He has also been collaborating closely with the Colorado – based band “Brother’s Keeper”, whose debut album will drop on August 8th, 2014. Manson plays and sings on the album which he  co-produced along with the band, and he also co-wrote much of the material for the project. Jono plays live with Brothers Keeper as often as schedules allow. He has also been touring extensively throughout the continental United States as a solo artist and as a member of John Popper and the Duskray Troubadours and also performed three European tours in the last two years. While not on the road, Jono has spent most of his time writing songs and producing records.

Recent projects produced by Manson include albums for Santa Fe’s favorite alt-country rockers Anthony Leon and the Chain, Grammy-Award winner John Popper (Manson also co-wrote much of the material for this project), Tao Rodriguez-Seeger (grandson of folk icon Pete Seeger), NM Music Award winners Jaime Michaels (Album of the Year) and Kito Peters (Best Humorous/Novelty), Southern California roots-rocker Lee  Simpson, Stefano Barotti, Momo (Sony/BMG) and The Barnetti Bros. (Universal Records). Jono also recently recorded and/or mixed records for David BerkeleyJeff Scroggins and Colorado, Italian rockers Mojo Filter, Shurman from Austin, TX, and many others. Manson was honored with a NM Music Award for “Producer of the Year” for his work with Michaels. He is currently producing albums for legendary Italian roots-rockers The Mandolin Brothers, folk singer/songwriter Daniel Boling, and Pakistani Sufi/Folk rockers The Sketches. See the production and discography sections of this site for more information.

Jono’s newest album, “Angels on the Other Side” was released in March of 2014.

Jono comes from a family full of creative people. For example, his mother was a principle member in the Martha Graham dance company, who also worked alongside the likes of Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Leonard Bernstein and Jono’s cousins are the filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen. So, it’s not surprising that he formed his first all-original band in 1968, at the age of seven and, from that moment on, never looked back.

Manson fronted many groups throughout his school years, always playing original music. He became a full-time professional musician at the age of 19, when he began working almost nightly in bars and clubs in his native New York City. In 1981, along with legendary NYC guitarist Simon Chardiet, he founded “Joey Miserable and the Worms” (which later became just “The Worms”). The six piece band played it’s own infectious blend of jump blues, funk, rockabilly, country and R&B. To this day, Manson’s songwriting reflects a wide range of styles, and defies easy classification. During his ten years with the Worms, Jono played repeatedly in virtually every live music club on the New York scene, including Max’s Kansas City, Dan Lynch’s, CBGB, The Ritz, Peppermint Lounge, the Lone Star Cafe and, of course, the now legendary Nightingales.

While playing with the Worms, Manson also found time to participate in numerous side bands such as “The Mighty Sweetones” and “The Dogs” , and the “Les Ismore Orchestra”, to name just a few. These Manson side-bands also included members of other infamous NYC bar bands such as “The Blue Chieftans”, “God Street Wine”, “The Five Chinese Brothers”, “Mumbo Gumbo”, and “The Surreal McCoys”. Jono recalls several years in the mid-1980’s when he played over 365 gigs a year, without ever leaving New York City. Towards the late 1980’s Manson did, however, begin touring outside of New York. The Worms’ two independently released albums had become favorites on college radio playlists across the midwestern USA and the group followed the trail. The band had a short-lived development deal with CBS/Epic Records, who chose not to release an album, and in 1990 they played their last show.

It was during this period Manson opened his first recording studio in Brooklyn, NY, and began recording and and producing countless other artists, an activity that he continues to this day.

In 1993 Manson, feeling that he needed a change of scenery, moved from his hometown and resettled in the mountains of northern New Mexico, where he quickly set up a new home base. In no time he was up to his old tricks, playing locally, touring nationally, writing and recording solo projects and producing music for local musicians.

In December of 1995 Manson’s album “Almost Home” was released on A&M Records. The album featured, among others, members of Blues Traveler, The Allman Bros. Band, and The Rolling Thunder Review.

In the summers of 1995, 1996 and 1997 Manson played as part of the H.O.R.D.E tour alongside Sheryl Crow, Dave Mathews, Taj Mahal, Pete Droge, Lenny Kravitz, Neil Young, and many others. When not on the road with his own band, or as the lead singer for “High Plains Drifter”, he could be found working the clubs in his adopted home of Santa Fe NM

In 1998 “Little Big Man”, produced by Manson’s old pal from his NYC days, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel (Del Lords, Steve Earle, Yayhoos), was released on Paradigm Records. That same year, the Italian label “Club de Musique” released Manson’s independently produced “One Horse Town”, marking the beginning of the artist’s European career. Jono has toured in Europe every year since, playing gigs in Denmark, Switzerland, England, Ireland, France and of course Italy where, to date, six of his self- produced CDs have been released.

His work as a producer also expanded into the European market. He has completed a range of projects including two albums for singer/songwriter Stefano Barotti, and Italian pop phenomenon Momo (Sony/BMG). In fact, Manson became so intensely connected to the Italian music scene that at one point he decided to pull up stakes and relocate. He made his base in Italy from 2003-2006.
Manson has also made many guest appearances on a many outside projects, both as a instrumentalist and vocalist, ranging from homegrown indie projects to multi-platinum albums. He has also lent his voice to a growing number of voice-overs and commercial jingles. He has also been the subject of a one hour episode of the “House of Blues Radio Hour” (in which he was interviewed by Dan Ackroyd aka Elwood Blues), as well as an episode of VH-1 “Tuned In”, both of which aired nationally in the USA.

In addition to all of the above, Jono has a growing number of film and television music credits to his name. Most notably, he wrote and produced several songs for Kevin Costner’s “The Postman, in which he also had a small on-screen role, and his recording of “Miss Fabulous” is featured in the Farrelly Brothers’ hit movie “Kingpin”.

Musicians on Jono Manson’s CDs include:

Warren Haynes, Mark Clark, The James Brown Horns,Tom Brumley, Nicky Hopkins, Ian Wallace, Wally Ingram, Paolo Bonfanti, Beppe Gambetta, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Joe Flood, James Wormworth III, Mike Merritt, Craig Dreyer, John Popper, Howie Wyeth, Kevin Trainor, Eric Schenkman, Joe Terry, Mary Lee Kortes, Bobby Sheehan, Chan Kinchla, Steve Lindsay, Ron Sunshine, Jerry Dugger, Sharon Gilchrist, Tom Adler, Peter Williams, and others.

Jono Manson has perfomed and/or worked in the studio with:

Blues Traveler, Roscoe Gordon, Bo Diddley, Barrett Martin, Joan Osborne, Dr. John, Taj Mahal, Bruce Willis, Carol King, Phoebe Snow, Paul Shaeffer, Mumbo Gumbo, Wally Ingram, Amy Grant, Leland Sklar, Willie Green, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Billy Bragg, Bob Weir, Buddy Cage, Bernie Worrell, Steve Earle, Taj Mahal, Kris Kristofferson, Terry Allen, Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, Bruce Sprigsteen, Patterson Hood, Keller Williams, Eric Weissberg, Joan Baez, Toshi Reagan, Ani DiFranco, Richie Havens, Warren Haynes, Pete Seeger, Tao Rodriguez – Seeger, Chris Barron, The Holmes Brothers, Kevin Costner, and many many others.
Jono Manson currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When he is not on the road, he continues to perform in area venues, but spends much of his time working on a wide range of projects in his recording studio.

Jono is not currently signed to a record deal and is, for the moment, self-managed. At present he owns 100% of the publishing of his rather extensive catalog (administered by Bug Music), and he also controls the rights to all of his master recordings, with the sole exception of his 1995 A&M release “Almost Home”.

After the release of additional television films and their soundtracks in 2010, Lovato’s personal issues put her career on hiatus and ended Sonny with a Chance after its second season. Her third album, Unbroken (2011), addresses several of her difficulties. Its lead single, “Skyscraper”, became Lovato’s first top ten single as well as first platinum single in the US; its second single, “Give Your Heart a Break”, was certified triple platinum. Lovato was a judge and mentor on the American version of The X Factor in 2012 and 2013. Her fourth album, Demi (2013), had first-week sales of 110,000 copies (the best debut week of Lovato’s recording career) and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. Its lead single, “Heart Attack”, became her second top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. It also peaked at No. 3 in the United Kingdom, becoming her highest charting single and first to break the top 10 in the UK. Lovato’s fifth album, Confident (2015), debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.

Lovato has received a number of accolades, including an MTV Video Music Award, thirteen Teen Choice Awards, five People’s Choice Awards, two ALMA Awards and a Billboard Touring Award. In 2013, Maxim ranked her 26th on its Hot 100 list and Billboard ranked her second on its Social 50 Artists of the Year list. Outside the entertainment industry, Lovato is involved with several social and environmental causes. In May 2013, she was cited for her dedication as a mentor to teens and young adults with mental-health challenges at a National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Washington, D.C. She has also become an advocate for the LGBT community. In 2014, she was announced as the Grand Marshal for LA PRIDE week, and that same year she became the face for Human Rights Campaign’s Americans for Marriage Equality Campaign.
