Music Commission Orientation

Welcome

On behalf of Governor Lujan Grisham, the Department of Cultural Affairs, and New Mexico Arts, congratulations on your appointment to the New Mexico Music Commission! We’re elated the Governor has selected you to represent our state’s unique and diverse music industry as a Music Commissioner. Thank you for choosing to serve our beloved music community. We welcome you and look forward to working with you.

About

Your Music Commission orientation consists of 9 chapters:

  • 1 defines syntax and formatting of the orientation materials, identifies how definitions, key documents, and tasks are presented, and outlines approximate time of completion and due date.
  • 2-4 will help you prepare for your first commission meeting.
  • 5-7 deliver a chronological history of the commission organized by Gubernatorial administration, from the year the commission was established in 2005 to the present. These chapters detail key governing documents, personnel, strategy, events, projects, and milestones.
  • 8 provides an opportunity for you to ask questions and verify you have completed the orientation.
  • 9 contains a list of key documents, web pages, and social media cited throughout the orientation, for your future reference.
Web Site

Due to COVID health restrictions, your orientation will take place digitally through the Commission’s web site. The document you’re currently reading examples the site’s design, formatting, and menu options. The site also serves as the commission’s document archive and the materials comprising your orientation are housed here.

The visual design (i.e., formatting, fonts, graphics, etc.) of your orientation materials will alternate between this web page design and Microsoft Word documents saved to portable document format (pdf). Several external web sites, social media, and email links are also included in the orientation, as well as a few hard copy documents which were scanned to pdf (the quality of those will be a bit grainy). Essentially, your orientation consists of a collection of disparate web pages and pdf files anchored to this web page using hyperlinks.

As a general rule, when documents containing links are printed, access to the linked information is lost. Bio

Phil Moon enjoyed a 40-year career in the music and recording equipment business working for a number of innovative companies. Mostly in the marketing area, he also handled sales management and executive duties. He and his wife Carol retired to Santa Fe from southern California in 2016.

His music career started in the 1960’s as a guitarist in high school and college bands. He has maintained his musical performance activities and currently plays in the Santa Fe-based band Road House Prophets.

Moon’s college education prepared him for a teaching career, which never materialized. In his native Indiana, he gave up the idea of teaching and went to work at a record store, then a music store. He landed a job at MXR Innovations in 1979 and moved to Rochester NY, then to Yamaha in California in 1982.

While at Yamaha (1982-1991), Moon was instrumental in the advertising, promotion and marketing of many landmark products including the DX7, SPX90 and PM3000 mixer. He rose to the position of Marketing Manager for Synthesizers (a strange position for a guitarist). After leaving Yamaha, he founded Loft Marketing, a consulting firm that specialized in marketing support and market research. During this time, he was also very involved in NAMM’s education and development programs. Loft Marketing ran from 1991 until 2000, with 1996 dedicated to acting as VP Sales & Marketing at Alesis.

From 2000-2002 Moon was Director of Marketing Communications at JBL Pro, then Vice President Sales and Marketing at Lynx Studio Technology from 2003-2016, where he helped to develop the Aurora and Hilo converters.

Almost immediately upon retiring to Santa Fe, Moon was recruited by David Schwartz to help launch the Platinum Music Awards and the NM Music Commission Foundation, where he is an active participant. The latest outreach program of the Foundation is the new Music Biz Monday monthly webinar.

Bio

Zenobia grew up singing in a Baptist church in East L.A. and made her professional theater debut at 18 in the L.A. and Broadway casts of HAiR.  Studio backup singer: her claim to fame was in 1982 in NYC, when she debuted the disco hit, “It’s Raining Men” (co-written by HAiR alumni Paul Jabara).  Advertising career: as an award-winning commercial producer, Zenobia produced huge talents Luther Van Dross, Lou Rawles, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Martin, Ossie Davis, Marcia Gay Harden, James Brown and Richie Havens, etc. Musician/singer/songwriter: 2001 – debuted her first CD, “Home”. 2014 – her CD “Resurrection” included the contemporary gospel single, “One More Night”, winner of the “Best Gospel Song” award/New Mexico Music Awards.  Zenobia and music partner, Jay Boy Adams, released their album, “How Long, How Long” in 2014 and tour the US/Europe with their band.  Zenobia is featured on Jay Boy’s Billboard-charted Americana CD, “Let It Go”.
